The Passing of a Legend

By J. B. Eissac

............I remember a few years back while role-playing with some of the other Section 8 members my character had just gotten an item, a silver fox head medallion.  Marc Rivera, the GM at the time, took the magical item straight from Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series, something that I am truly grateful for.
At the time he wouldn’t tell me what the silver fox head medallion did, but introduced me to The Wheel of Time.  I was currently in the middle of reading about Salvatore’s Drizzt Do’ Urden, however I was ready for a change of pace.
I went to the nearest bookstore and picked up the Eye of the World.  Over the course of the next five weeks I read all ten books of Jordan’s that were out at the time.
I fully fell into Jordan’s world, absorbed by is style of telling a story and is complex interweaving of tales.  Robert Jordan was able to tell not just the tale of one hero, but tell the tale of a world.
To this day I truly desire to know about all the characters, weather I hate them or love them, I need to know what happens to them.  At times I have complained about Jordan’s need to go into such detail and bring in characters that really have little to do with the main story itself.  I have come to understand that that is why Jordan is so great, all those details and characters form to create one great epic fantasy.
Over the last few weeks I have gone back to the books and crave more and more as I listen to them on my computer.  I have already read all the books of the famous series and yet need to experience the world all over again.  To relive Rand pulling Callindor from the stone, Mat battling Galad and Gawyn, and the great battle of Dumai’s Wells, a moment that still sends chills down my back when I think about it.
Robert Jordan has impacted my life in a way few people have before.  I aim to be nearly as good a writer as Jordan.  While listening to his stories I am inspired to open up a new word document and start creating.  I am always awed by just how good of a writer he is.
I was shocked when I found out that Robert Jordan had passed away.  Sadness for the end of the life of one of the best fantasy writers at the time and the knowledge that he would no be around to see the completion of the series that has defined his career.  It’s weird to think of how many people I know that have been reading his books lately in anticipation for the final one of the chapter.
There is news that the last book will be finished and printed to complete the Wheel of time, but to me it will not feel the same.  I will be on line with the rest of the Jordan fans ready to read the last installment, but there will be always be a wondering.  How would Jordan truly finish his tale.
“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend.  Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.”I truly hope that the Legend of Robert Jordan never fades.  May it live on forever for millions of other fans to enjoy.  Robert Jordan deserves nothing less.
